Teeth whitening is a cosmetic treatment designed to lighten the shade of teeth by removing stains and discolouration. Performed either in-clinic or at home, it uses agents such as hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, which work deep within the tooth to target the pigments responsible for staining.
Why do teeth become discoloured?
Certain medications, such as tetracyclines, can affect tooth colour, especially in young children.
Coffee, tea, red wine, and certain strongly coloured foods can stain tooth enamel.
Nicotine and tar build up on the teeth, causing significant yellowing.
With age, tooth enamel becomes thinner, revealing the dentine beneath, which is naturally more yellow.
